Purposeful Business Teaching Innovation Group

A group of business school leaders and faculty, business leaders, and supporting institutions like sector groups, accreditation bodies and rankings providers, meeting annually to identify and highlight innovations in teaching purposeful business in UK business schools.

Background

In its briefing on Teaching Purposeful Business in UK Business Schools, the British Academy called on business school leaders and faculty, business leaders, and supporting institutions (like sector groups, accreditation bodies and rankings providers) to form a Purposeful Business Teaching Innovation Group.

The briefing reflected on the different ways in which purpose could be placed more firmly at the heart of business and management teaching, from curricula to teaching approaches and institutional arrangements. But it also highlighted that business schools have not been standing still, something the Academy’s SHAPE Observatory also demonstrated in its 2021 deep-dive report on business and management.

In recognising examples of solutions already out there, the briefing also highlighted that there is no one-size-fits-all approach with teaching business, let alone purposeful business. Continual innovation and evolution is one of the reasons business is so successful, and business schools can and often do mirror this. However, the discussions that fed into the briefing and the Future of the Corporation programme which it drew on, highlighted the need for innovations to be more widely adopted and new ideas to be applied.

Forming this purposeful business teaching innovation group is a means of supporting this process of innovation and adoption.

Objectives

The objectives of the Purposeful Business Teaching Innovation Group are:

  • To provide a forum for business school leaders and faculty, business leaders, and supporting institutions (like sector groups, accreditation bodies and rankings providers) annually to discuss progress towards teaching purposeful business.
  • To identify examples of good practices and exchange insights on how to embed notions of purposeful business in teaching or institutional structures.
  • To support the dissemination of good practices and innovations in teaching purposeful business.

How to participate

Participation in the Group is via invitation only, however, if you would like to put yourself forward or if you have suggestions of good practices you would like the group to consider, please contact Henry on [email protected] or [email protected]
