Summary
Pamela Sammons is Professor (Emeritus) at the Department of Education, University of Oxford and Emeritus Fellow at Jesus College, Oxford. Her research career spans four decades and has focused on school effectiveness and improvement, educational leadership, teaching quality, pre-school and promoting equity in education. Sammons is also recognised for her contributions to longitudinal studies and mixed methods research in education.
Sammons was awarded a PhD in 1986 for her study of vocational further education participation in inner London, after earning a Bachelor of Social Science (BSocSci) degree in Geography and Economics from the University of Bristol in 1977. Subsequently she worked as a researcher at the University of Kent, the Research and Statistics Branch of the Inner London Education Authority and then the London School of Economics before moving to the Institute of Education, University of London where she was an Associate Director/Director of the International School Effectiveness and Improvement Centre from 1993-2004.
In 1999, she was appointed a Professor of Education at the Institute of Education, University of London going on to hold professorships at the School of Education, University of Nottingham (2004-2009) and the Department of Education, University of Oxford (2009-2020). Most recently, Sammons was employed as an External Academic Advisor to the INTERACT project at the Norwegian Center for Learning Environment & Behavioural Research in Education, University of Stavanger (2020-2025). She has been a visiting professor at a number of universities including the University of Cyprus and the Education University of Hong Kong.
She has led many major research projects on school effectiveness and improvement and longitudinal, cross-phase research on the impact of pre-school that has informed policy and practice in the UK and beyond. Sammons has published over 130 peer-reviewed journal articles, numerous books, monographs and policy publications, and close to 200 research reports.
