Summary

Michael Hewson Crawford was born on 7 December 1939, and educated at St Paul's School, London, and Oriel College, Oxford; after two years as a Rome Scholar (1962-4), in the course of a never-to-be-completed doctorate, he was elected as a Research Fellow of Christ's College, Cambridge, and subsequently appointed as a University Assistant Lecturer and Lecturer. He edited the Papers of the British School at Rome, 1975-8, the Journal of Roman Studies, 1980-4, and the Bulletin of the Institute of Classical Studies, Ancient History, 2011-15, initially with John North and Amelie Kuhrt. He excavated at Fregellae, south of Rome, and in the Valpolcevera, in the hinterland of Genoa, and has devoted many seasons of field-work to the inscriptions of Aphrodisias, as assistant to Joyce Reynolds. Elected as FBA in 1980, he was invited to fill the Chair of Ancient History at UCL from 1986. Since then, he has directed or co-directed at UCL (with Benet Salway) the AHRC-funded projects Law and Empire: Law after Empire; (with John North) The Lexicon of Festus; and at the ICS Imagines Italicae. He is currently the Honorary Librarian of the ICS Library; and represents the British Academy on the Board of UK Research Reserve.
