Summary

Gert Biesta obtained his PhD in education from Leiden University, the Netherlands, in 1992. In 1999 he moved to the UK and since then has been working at several universities in England and Scotland, most recently at the Moray House School of Education and Sport, University of Edinburgh, as Professor of Educational Theory and Pedagogy (part-time). He is also Professor of Public Education in the Centre for Public Education and Pedagogy at Maynooth University, Ireland (part-time), and Visiting Professor (Professor II) at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences. He has held visiting professorships at universities in Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Netherlands.

He advises the Dutch government and parliament on educational matters as an appointed member of the Education Council of the Netherlands and has been an expert advisor for the Flemish government and the Council of Europe. His work focuses on the theory of education and the philosophy of educational and social science research. He has published widely on teaching, teacher education, curriculum theory, citizenship education, arts education, religious education, education policy and research methodology.

His work has so far been published in more than twenty different languages. He has received honorary doctorates from Uppsala University (Sweden), Örebro University (Sweden) and the University of Oulu (Finland), and was awarded the Grand Medal of the University of Ghent (Belgium).
