Summary

Alfredo J. Artiles is the Lee L. Jacks Professor of Education at Stanford University. He is the Director of the Research Institute at Stanford’s Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity. 

Dr. Artiles studies educational equity paradoxes. He examines how protections afforded by disability status can unwittingly stratify educational opportunities for historically underserved groups and is advancing responses to these inequities. He uses an interdisciplinary lens to interrogate the ideologies that organise the sociocultural lives of institutions and makes visible the role of power in naming and ordering intersectional identity categories of exception. 

Dr. Artiles has been appointed to consensus panels of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine focusing on English Learners, Opportunity Gaps in Early Education, and the Future of the Institute of Educational Sciences. He was a member of the Obama White House Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. Artiles is President of the National Academy of Education, is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), and a Senior Research Fellow at the Learning Policy Institute.

Prof. Artiles is editor of the book series 'Futures of Disability in Worlds of Difference' (Harvard Education Press). His scholarship has been supported by federal agencies and foundations. He and his colleagues led the federally funded National Center for Culturally Responsive Educational Systems and the Region IX Equity Assistance Center. Artiles was a Resident Fellow at Stanford’s Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioural Sciences. He received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Göteborgs (Sweden) and was Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham (UK). He delivered AERA’s 2011 Wallace Lecture and the 2017 Brown Lecture. Artiles has received numerous awards such as AERA’s Review of Research Award, the Palmer O. Johnson Award, and the Spencer Foundation Mentoring award
