We are delighted to announce that, from 1 July 2025, Liverpool University Press will be the British Academy’s new publishing partner.
For 120 years, the Academy has had a good publishing relationship with Oxford University Press. But in a rigorous tender exercise launched by the Academy in summer 2024, Liverpool University Press presented a creative and robust response to the Academy’s new publishing strategy – which focuses on meeting evolving trends in the publishing landscape and sets out an ambition to be fully Open Access over time – and this led to the success of LUP’s bid.
LUP has been at the forefront of imaginative, agile and forward thinking about the future of academic publishing and how to tap into the ever-growing audience of educated readers. This new partnership will include plans to harness our backlist stretching back decades to make sure this scholarship can be easily accessed by a global market.
We believe that LUP’s values and strategy align very closely with our own – being a publisher with humanities and social sciences at its core. Its place in the city of Liverpool and its history and heritage is reflected in its progressive agenda, which aligns with the work the Academy wants to do to make our work more accessible to curious minds everywhere.
We are very excited by the possibilities this new relationship presents for promoting awareness of, and access to, the excellent and important work issued through the Academy’s wide-ranging book publishing programme.
