Transition to Liverpool University Press: FAQs

The volumes issued through the British Academy's academic publishing programme have always been, and will remain, British Academy publications. From 1 July 2025 Liverpool University Press will take over the provision of marketing and distribution services for all the Academy’s volumes that are in print. In all other respects the Academy remains the publisher of these volumes. The Academy is solely responsible for selecting the titles, and co-ordinating their editing and production. Any contract signed by a volume author or editor remains in place with the British Academy, unchanged.

Yes, Academy books will continue to be sold in the US and around the world through Liverpool University Press. You can visit LUP's website for more detailed and region-specific information regarding distribution.

For new books, there will be simultaneous publication in the UK and US.

The print edition will be published simultaneously in the UK and in the US. For Proceedings of the British Academy volumes, for British Academy Monographs, and for scholarly editions, your book will be available digitally about two weeks prior to the print publication. These timings represent an improvement on previous arrangements, under which print publication in the US and any form of digital publication would be available several months after publication of the UK print edition.

Under the new arrangements with LUP, the content of all new volumes in the Proceedings of the British Academy series will be made available open access after the sale of a certain number of copies. In specific instances where funding to support OA dissemination may be available, some Proceedings volumes may be made available OA immediately on publication.

Volumes in the British Academy Monograph series that are already open access will continue to be freely available via OAPEN, the Directory of Open Access Books, JSTOR, and Liverpool University Press's own website.

Volumes in the Early English Church Music series will continue to be published for the British Academy by Stainer & Bell. They are not affected by the new arrangement.

From 1 July 2025 responsibility for marketing and distributing British Academy books previously published by OUP will pass to LUP; and no further new Academy volumes will be published through OUP.

The content of Academy books that has been available digitally from OUP via the British Academy Scholarship Online platform will continue to be available to existing library subscribers for the duration of their current subscription (or in perpetuity for customers with lifetime subscriptions).
