Samuel Gardiner was one of those proposed to be a founding Fellow of the British Academy, but he never became a Fellow because he died (in February 1902) before the Academy received its Royal Charter (in August 1902); see ‘A Documentary Account of the Foundation of the British Academy’, p. 13.
