E.P. Sanders conveyed a sense of dignity and purpose, but his disarming smile and occasional frown hinted at underlying depths of feeling. Outstanding among students of the New Testament and ancient Judaism in his time, he changed the face of Pauline study, enlarged historical approaches to the figure of Jesus, and brought back to general view the common features of the Judaism in which Jesus and Paul were rooted.
