Nicholas Round was a historian, critic, and translator of Spanish literature. His interests were wide-ranging: beginning with a thesis on the 15th-century translator of Plato, Pero Díaz de Toledo, he went on to become a leading expert on 19th-century realist Pérez Galdós, and influential critic and translator of major authors ranging from Fernando de Rojas and Golden Age dramatists to 20th-century poets and novelists, as well as an authority on late-medieval Iberian history and an energetic champion of translation studies. All his work was marked by profound scholarship and critical acumen, but also by an abiding engagement with ideas.
