Professor Jasper Griffin was a figure of great importance in the study of both Greek and Latin literature. Especially significant were his books Homer on Life and Death and Latin Poetry and Roman Life. A big book on tragedy was worked on, but not completed. Griffin also had a large influence on the subject as a tutor and lecturer. In his writing, as in person, he was utterly individual.
