Derek Beales was an exceptionally versatile historian who wrote with originality and authority on British, Italian, Habsburg, ecclesiastical and musical history. His most important achievement was the two-volume biography of the Emperor Joseph II, published in 1987 and 2009. His most important publications were England and Italy, 1859– 60; From Castlereagh to Gladstone, 1815–1885; The Risorgimento and the Unification of Italy; and Prosperity and Plunder: European Catholic Monasteries in the age of Revolution 1650–1815. He also wrote many important articles, many of which were assembled in Enlightenment and Reform in 18th Century Europe.
