John Gardner was Professor of Jurisprudence at University College, Oxford, from 2000 to 2016, and a Senior Research Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, from 2016 to 2019, until his sudden death from cancer aged 54. He was the leading theorist and philosopher of law of his generation. He specialised in theories of criminal law, discrimination law and tort law, as well as contributing to theories of the nature of law in general.
