Project
The Writing for International Research Excellence for Early Career academics in South Africa (WIRE-SA) project has been designed to address two interlinked priorities in South Africa. These are the persistent, historic and contemporary inequalities in health and (higher) education. The South African government’s National Development Plan has a stated goal of promoting a healthy life span, aligned to the World Health Organisation’s Sustainable Development Goals for improving health and well-being, reducing inequalities and reducing poverty. There is a distinct and vital role for social scientists to research and contribute to addressing health inequalities. The second priority focuses on inequalities in higher education through supporting the development of researchers within universities classified as ‘Historically Disadvantaged Institutions’ (HDI) in South Africa. The project team of specialists in applied social sciences, higher education and research development in a South African and international context, offers a distinct and important contribution to addressing these priorities.
Workshop Team: Professor Lindsay O’Dell, the Open University; Professor Alison September, University of Cape Town; Ms Anika Leslie-Walker, Nottingham Trent University.
