With more than 20 years of experience in Ugandan Sign Language (UgSL) teaching and research, Dr Lutalo-Kiingi has been involved in the establishment of training programs in UgSL instruction since 1994 and interpreting since 2002 at Kyambogo University in Uganda.
His research while in the UK will aim to investigate gaps and challenges in UgSLI services in different domains of life.
The existing UgSLI Diploma course will be evaluated and compared to training programmes at Heriot-Watt University and elsewhere in the UK, while context-specific contents and challenges will be reflected upon. At a time when the Diploma in UgSLI programme at Kyambogo University (KyU) has been taught for over 15 years, with over 200 qualified UgSL interpreters, KyU is preparing for an upgrade into a Bachelor’s degree.
