PANACEA extends the works built through GCRF Blue Communities program (2017-2022) to research on nature-based adaptation and mitigation practised by local and indigenous coastal communities in Southeast Asia to address climate change. Case studies are two UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in Palawan (Philippines) and Taka Bonerate-Kepulauan Selayar (Indonesia), and a marine park in Sabah, Malaysia (Tun Mustapha Park). PANACEA will co-create innovative nature-based adaptation and mitigation strategies, and implementation options with coastal communities, thereby contributing to policy formulation. This international collaboration deepens existing Philippines-Indonesia-Malaysia-UK network, and delivers a policy brief with actionable deliverables for scale-up and wider application in Southeast Asia and beyond through participatory approach and community empowerment in co-creation process. At local level, PANACEA will demonstrate integration of local Indigenous and scientific knowledge for benefits of conservation, preservation of local knowledge, and creation of new knowledge in marine conservation, which will in turn support coastal livelihoods and quality of life.
