British Academy President responds to the Autumn statement
1 Nov 2024
The British Academy welcomes the Chancellor’s commitment to investing in research and development as a vital driver for the UK’s prosperity, health, and security. This commitment, coupled with further support for the creative industries, is a positive step that acknowledges the significant contribution these sectors make to the UK's economy and cultural landscape.
In its representation to HM Treasury, the Academy – the UK’s national academy for the humanities and social sciences – had called for the UK to be a leading country in the G7 on R&D (Research and Development), an urgent review of higher education funding and for the reduction of barriers to international collaboration and research mobility.
Professor Julia Black, President of the British Academy, said:
"The UK's research and innovation environment offers enormous benefits to society and the economy, with the humanities and social sciences among our greatest strengths. We welcome the Chancellor's recognition of the importance of R&D and the National Academies role in maintaining the UK’s reputation as a world leader in higher education and research.
"Universities are at the heart of our communities, enriching people's lives and shaping their futures. In the face of serious threats to the higher education and research landscape, we urge the government to deliver a sustainable Higher Education model that harnesses the vast potential of the humanities and social sciences."
