Rankings confirm UK's world-leading status in humanities and social sciences

26 Feb 2014

Newly released QS World University Rankings show that despite large increases in investment by the US, China, Singapore and other Asian nations, UK universities remain world-leading in humanities and social science disciplines, with particular strengths in politics and international studies, geography, sociology, English, education, history, law, psychology, languages, economics and philosophy.

Overall the UK remains second to the USA, but faces rapidly growing competition, especially in science, engineering and technology.

Dr Robin Jackson, the British Academy's Chief Executive, said: "University rankings deserve to be taken with a pinch of salt. But these latest demonstrate the long-standing strength of the humanities and social sciences in the UK. Universities continue to offer both home students  - and ever-increasing numbers of overseas students, 60% of whom come here to study humanities and social sciences – some of the world's best education in these disciplines.

"We should also celebrate the rise of more strong universities around the globe. UK universities have contributed to these advances, developing lasting relationships of great value. Many of these universities recognise and welcome our contributions and leadership."
