British Academy announces Postdoctoral Fellowships for 2016

The British Academy is pleased to announce the new Postdoctoral Fellowship awards in the humanities and social sciences, to be taken up in autumn 2016.

The Postdoctoral Fellowships Scheme is the Academy’s flagship programme for early career academics, based at universities around the UK.

These three-year Fellowships enable outstanding early career scholars to strengthen their experience of research and teaching in a university environment. The primary emphasis is on completing a significant piece of publishable research, giving award holders a base on which to build a successful academic career.

The British Academy has awarded 45 new Postdoctoral Fellowships, whose research areas span the full breadth of the humanities and social sciences, including geography, psychology, economics, classics and law.

Much of the research supported by these Fellowships will contribute to improving our understanding of current national and international challenges. Projects include:

• The tunes that stick forever in memory: Cognitive ageing insights revealed by earworms by Dr Georgia Floridou, University of Sheffield


• A generational study of social mobility and gender through clerical workers in Britain 1920-2000 by Dr Laura Paterson, University of Oxford


• Conversion out of Poverty? Exploring the Origins and Long-Term Consequences of Christian Missionary Activities in Africa by Dr Felix Paul Meier zu Selhausen, University of Sussex


• Understanding the impact of counter terrorism policy on the structures of democratic space within HE institutions by Dr Narzanin Massoumi, University of Bath
