National Academies welcome new Prime Minister
24 Jul 2019
The Presidents of the four UK National Academies have written to the new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, to congratulate him on his appointment to the role and to urge him to increase investment in research and innovation.
Professor Sir David Cannadine, President of The British Academy, joined his counterparts at the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Academy of Medical Sciences, in highlighting the ‘transformative’ benefits of research. The Presidents welcomed the Prime Minister’s remarks in his opening speech about the value of research and innovation, and called on Mr Johnson to prepare the ground for a close association with European funding programmes, such as the upcoming Horizon Europe and to avoid risking significant damage to the UK’s world-leading research and innovation base.
