Deborah Bull CBE to chair British Academy event on research and the arts as part of Inside Out Festival

16 Nov 2014

As part of the Inside Out Festival, the British Academy and the Culture Capital exchange will hold a free event titled ‘Artists in the Academy’ at the British Academy on Monday 20 October 2014.

A panel of artists, academics and researchers will discuss the relationship between researchers and arts practitioners.

The event will be chaired by Deborah Bull, Director Creative Partnerships, King’s College London, and speakers will include:

Di Mainstone, Artist
Tony White, Novelist and Editor
Jasmine Vardimon, Artistic Director Jasmine Vardimon Company
Dr Dominic Johnson, Queen Mary, University of London
Professor Phillip Crang, Royal Holloway, University of London

They will discuss how artists and researchers work together in reality, at a time when universities are exploring new ways to maximise the impact of their research, connecting  themselves to the wider world, and signalling a desire to bring the work of arts practitioners into the academy.

Other questions will include:

What differences to cross-discipline approaches make to outcomes? How are these collaborations made public? Do researchers and artists feel their work is somehow better validated – made more glamourous or intellectually intriguing – through working together?
