Cross-academy funding awarded to eight interdisciplinary research projects

31 Aug 2022

The British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society have today announced funding for eight interdisciplinary research projects based at universities across the UK.

Awarded under the APEX scheme (Academies Partnership in Supporting Excellence in Cross-disciplinary Research) with support from the Leverhulme Trust, the funding will enable established researchers with a strong track record in their respective field to pursue research that spans the social sciences and humanities, engineering and the sciences.

Each APEX award provides £100,000 funding for up to 24 months and is jointly awarded by the British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society. Award holders can also separately apply for up to £10,000 to create and lead public engagement projects linked to their APEX Award. See a full list of this year’s funded projects.

Professor Simon Swain FBA, Vice-President for Research and Higher Education Policy at the British Academy, said:

“We are delighted to award funding to such a fascinating and eclectic collection of research projects. By bringing together academics from different disciplines, the academies’ innovative APEX scheme will not only help researchers to develop new skills and methods, it will also help to solve problems whose solutions are beyond the scope of a single discipline or area of research practice. We wish the research teams the best of luck with their projects and look forward to seeing the results.”

The 2023 APEX Awards will open for applications on 7 September and will close on 2 November 2022. For further information, please contact [email protected].
