British Academy welcomes new Director of the British School at Rome
10 Jul 2017
The British Academy congratulates Professor Stephen J. Milner on his appointment as Director of the British School at Rome.
Professor Milner will take up his post at the start of the 2017-18 academic year, succeeding Professor Christopher Smith, who is stepping down after eight years in the position.
Professor Milner will be on secondment from the University of Manchester, where he is Serena Professor of Italian, Chair of Italian Studies and Head of Department.
The British School at Rome is one of eight British International Research Institutes, autonomous organisations who receive annual funding from the British Academy for their work around the world. They conduct research, collaborate with overseas and UK-based partners, and provide facilities, training and financial, academic and logistical support to researchers. They also run events programmes, held in the UK and overseas.
In the latest issue of the British Academy Review, Professor Smith reflects on how the movement of people and ideas across the centuries has been studied through the work of the BSR.
