British Academy responds to Prime Minister's Jodrell Bank speech

22 May 2018

In response to the Prime Minister’s speech at Jodrell Bank announcing her intention for the UK to associate fully to the next European research funding framework.

Alun Evans, Chief Executive at the British Academy said:

“The Prime Minister is absolutely right to wish to associate fully to the EU’s next research programme. The UK’s status as a world leader in research is in no small part thanks to its links with Europe and the rest of the world, especially in the humanities and social sciences. Today’s announcement will help build certainty for research communities across Europe.

“For UK researchers, access to European funding, is about so much more than the money. It means that UK researchers can build global visibility and vital international research networks. It also means that we can continue to attract the very best talent and collaborate to foster diverse research cultures and practices.

“The benefits of such a relationship would be reciprocal for both the UK and the European Union. In the European Research Council, just one part of the EU’s research programme, UK-based humanities and social sciences scholars have won more than a third of all funding ever provided, illustrating our world-leading excellence in these disciplines.”
