British Academy comments on latest UCAS figures

2 Feb 2015

The British Academy welcomes the news that the latest UCAS figures, released Friday 30 January, show an overall 2% rise in applications to UK universities (including EU and international students). In particular, the Academy notes that UK applications for social studies have risen by 9%, for law by 4% and for non-European languages and literatures by 7%.

Dr Robin Jackson said: “I am especially pleased to see these increases in demand for humanities and social science subjects, indicating rising interest from those wishing to study subjects of enduring value.

“Given the concerns the Academy has consistently expressed over the UK’s language skills deficit, it is particularly welcome to see a rise in the percentage of those applying to study languages at UK universities. We hope to see such applications increase further over the coming years, helping to strengthen university language provision, which in turn will support the UK’s aspirations for growth and global influence.”
