Summary

Born 1943. Art historian and writer. Taught in various places in U.K. and U.S., notably U C Berkeley, where he is now professor emeritus. Author of a series of books on the formal character and social circumstances of modern art, as well as the nature of 'depiction' and of human response to complex pictorial orderings. Currently working on two books, a study of certain painters' imagining of 'heaven on earth' or 'the world to come', and a set of essays on Cezanne.
