Born in London; educated at Francis Holland School, London, The Study, Montreal, and Howells School, Denbigh; Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford 1947-50, II (1); Diploma in Archive Administration, UCL, London 1950-1. Assistant to the Editor, Victoria County Histories, and editor of Middlesex, 1952-9; teacher, Christ Church School, North Finchley, 1960; history teacher, Queens College Harley Street London 1960-4; Fellow and Tutor in History Lady Margaret Hall (1964-1986); visiting professor, Dartmouth College, 1986-7. In London at Institute of Historical Research 1987-2021. Later work focused on medieval law and demolishing feudalism
