Summary
Roger Koenker was born in North Dakota, did an undergraduate degree at Grinnell College, and his Phd in Economics at the University of Michigan.
He was a member of the technical staff of Bell Telephone Laboratories from 1976-1983, and subsequently was Professor of Economics and Statistics at the University of Illinois until retiring in 2018. Since then he has been Honorary Professor of Economics at University College London.
He is an elected Fellow of the Econometric Society, the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. In 2010 he was awarded the Emanuel and Carol Parzen Prize for Statistical Innovation for his work on quantile regression.
Since 2014 his research has focused primarily on empirical Bayes methods for studying heterogeneity and inequality in economics and related fields.
