Summary

Professor Pierre Rosanvallon FB is currently emeritus professor at the Collège de France where he was elected in 2001 ("histoire moderne et contemporaine du politique"). He is also an honorary director of studies at the Ecole des Hautes études en sciences sociales where he was appointed in 1983.

He has published 25 books translated in 27 languages and published in 30 countries. Among them in English: "The Demands of liberty: civil society in France since the Revolution", "The Society of equals" and "Good government: democracy beyond elections" (Harvard UP); "The New social question: rethinking the welfare state" and "Democratic legitimacy: impartiality, reflexivity, proximity", (Princeton UP); "Counter democracy: politics in an age of distrust"( The Seely lectures) at Cambridge UP; "Democracy, past and future" (Columbia UP); "The Populist Century"(Polity press).

He was awarded The Spinozalens prize in Amsterdam and the Niklas Luhman prize in Bielefeld. He received honorary degrees from the Universities of Neuchatel (Switzerland), Buenos-Aires and Rosario (Argentina), London/Queen Mary College.

As well as his academic career, in 2002 he created and currently chairs the thinktank and publishing house "La République des idées". He also created in 2008 the websites laviedesidees.fr and booksandideas.com.
