Summary

Max Deeg (b. 1958, Germany) is Professor in Buddhist Studies in the School of History, Archaeology and Religion, Cardiff University. He studied Germanic Languages, Linguistics, Japanese, Classical Indology, and Religious Studies at the University of Würzburg, Germany.

Deeg spent several years in Asia (Taiwan, Japan, India, Nepal). He held teaching and research positions in Germany, Japan, Taiwan, Austria and the UK. Deeg’s research is focused on the history of Buddhism in India and Buddhism’s spread through Central Asia to China. His particular interest lies in the historical, cultural, and religious exchange between India and China.

He has published several books (in German and English) and has contributed articles and chapters to various academic journals and edited volumes on different aspects of Buddhist history and on Buddhist pilgrimage and traveling.
