Summary
Karin Wahl-Jorgensen is Professor in the School of Journalism, Media and Culture at Cardiff University, and was elected President of the International Communication Association in 2025.
Her research focuses on journalism and citizenship, and she has authored or edited 12 books, and more than 80 journal articles and 50 book chapters.
Her authored books include 'Emotions, Media and Politics' (Polity, 2019), 'Digital Citizenship in a Datafied Society' (Polity Press, 2019, with Arne Hintz and Lina Dencik), 'Disasters and the Media' (Peter Lang, 2012; with Mervi Pantti and Simon Cottle), 'Journalists and the Public' (Hampton Press, 2007) and 'Citizens or Consumers?' (Open University Press, 2005; with Justin Lewis and Sanna Inthorn).
She has edited or co-edited an additional seven books, including 'Handbook of Journalism Studies' (Routledge, with Thomas Hanitzsch - second edition 2020, first edition 2009).
Between 2021 and 2026, she served as University Dean of Research Environment and Culture at Cardiff University.
She is a Fellow of the International Communication Association (ICA) and the Learned Society of Wales, where she is an elected member of Council.
She holds a PhD from Stanford University, USA, and an honorary doctorate from Roskilde University, Denmark.
Her research has been funded by £50m+ in grants from the British Academy, ESRC, AHRC, the European Commission, the Australian Research Council, Wellcome and the BBC Trust.
She is a member of the REF2029 panel for Unit of Assessment 34: Communication, Cultural and Media Studies, Library and Information Management.
