Summary

Judith Weir, a British composer, has worked extensively in vocal genres, including opera, choral music and solo song.

Words are her inspiration, and she has created music using texts from many languages and eras, including Chinese philosophy, epic poetry, folklore, German Romanticism and Scottish literature and culture. Her extensive work for orchestra has often centred around nature, both as a structural process and as a force in human society.

Judith has worked for extended periods as associate composer with the BBC Singers, and with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

From 2014-24, she held the royal appointment of Master of The Queen's/King's Music, providing music for many national and state occasions. In these posts, she has taken the opportunity to champion music as a school and university subject, and as a focal point for communal activity and adult learning."
