Summary

Hartmut Rosa was born and raised in the Black Forest (Schwarzwald), Germany, and educated at Albert Ludwigs University, Freiburg; LSE, London; Harvard University and Humboldt University, Berlin. He is a Professor of Sociology at Friedrich-Schiller-University in Jena as well Director of the Max-Weber-Center at Erfurt University. He was a visiting fellow and affiliated professor at the New School for Social Research in New York as well as the FMSH/EHESS in Paris, and received honorary doctorates from the University of Humanistic Studies, Utrecht; Aarhus University and ENS de Lyon. I

n 2021, he was elected as a member of the European Academy of Science (Academia Europaea, London), and in 2023, he was awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Award (DFG). His studies on 'Social Acceleration' (the speeding up of life in modern society) and on 'Resonance' (a conception of a non-alienated form of being in and in relation to the world) have gained global recognition and inspired a lot of research worldwide. His approach is based on the traditions of Critical Theory as well as Phenomenology and aspires to develop a Sociology of Our Relationship to the World.
