Summary

I work on Russian history and culture from the late eighteenth century to the present day. My most recent book was St Petersburg, Shadows of the Past, published by Yale University Press in 2014 (paperback 2016). It was shortlisted for the Pushkin Russian Book Prize in 2015. Among my research interests are Russian national identity and views of the West, the role of regionalism in Russian culture, the history of Leningrad and St Petersburg, and childhood in Russia (Children's World: Growing Up in Russia, 1890-1991, was published by Yale University Press in 2007, and awarded the Grace Abbott Prize in 2008). I have also published studies of women's writing in Russia, of Russian modernism, and of the visual arts in Russia. I am currently researching a history of the Leningrad film studios, Lenfilm, from 1961 to 1991, supported by a Leverhulme Leadership award. My reviews and essays have appeared in many academic and general journals and newspapers, including The Times Literary Supplement, The Independent, and Prospect, and I have been a member of many prize juries and panels, including The Independent Prize for Foreign Fiction and the Joseph Brodsky Prize. In 2015, I served as President of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (USA), the first person ever elected to the position not working at an American university.
