Geza Vermes was a pioneering and prolific scholar who had a decisive impact both on the study of the Dead Sea scrolls and on the study of Jesus, two fields which aroused wide public interest in the second half of the 20th century, not least through his powerful advocacy. With some justification, he himself viewed his scholarly achievements as a product of his eventful life, which he documented in an autobiography, Providential Accidents, which was published in 1998, at the age of 74.
