Commemorate the life and work of cultural theorist Professor Stuart Hall FBA, ‘godfather of multiculturalism’, with a special screening of the 2013 documentary by award-winning filmmaker and writer Sir John Akomfrah Hon FBA.
Surrounding the screening will be a discussion to explore Hall’s inimitable legacy, followed by an audience Q&A.
Join us at the bar from 18:00, where we will be joined by SoulEndvr for a live jazz performance. The screening will begin at 18:30.
Speaker:
Julian Henriques is Professor and Convenor of the MA in Cultural Studies and the MA in Script Writing at Goldsmiths University of London. His background as a filmmaker has informed his research interests in the field of street technologies and cultures (particularly reggae dancehall sound systems) and in sound studies, as with Sound System Outernational research group, founded in 2015.
Chair:
Ian Christie FBA is a media historian and curator, currently Professor of Film and Media History at Birkbeck, University of London. He has written and edited books on Powell and Pressburger, Russian cinema, Martin Scorsese and Terry Gilliam, including his most recent works: 'Spaces: Exploring Spatial Experiences of Representation and Reception in Screen Media' (2024), and 'Eccentrism Turns 100: FEKS and the Early Soviet Avant-garde' (2024).
Among many exhibitions he has curated and contributed to are 'Modernism: Designing a New World' (V&A London, 2006) and 'Revolution: Russian Art 1917-32' (Royal Academy, 2017).
SoulEndvr is creative hub for musical talent and content and they are specialists in musician fixing and casting. We will be joined by Jay Phelps, one of the top trumpeters in the UK for over 20 years and Eddie Cicchetti on the bass, who will perform a live jazz rendition of Miles Davis classics.
