This lecture focuses on the discovery – initially as a result of looting – of the sanctuary on Keros, in the Cycladic islands of Greece. Archaeology has revealed one of the earliest regional ritual centres in the Aegean, dating from the third millennium BC. The deposition of deliberately broken symbolic materials, mainly of marble, poses questions of interpretation. Colin Renfrew explores why the location of deposition at the sanctuary contrasts strikingly with the monumentality of contemporary ritual structures in northwestern Europe.
