The Future of UK Housing

Wed 29 Oct 2014, 13:30 - 19:00

The British Academy, 10-11 Carlton House Terrace, London, SW1Y 5AH

On 29 October 2014, The British Academy held an event in partnership with the ESRC on UK Housing. The event, which took place at the British Academy, ‘set out the challenge’ of current and future housing provision in the UK.

The UK Housing market is a major component of the British economy and of considerable interest to policy makers, academics and the general public alike, with significant and sustained challenges that shape much of our social and economic life. The British Academy, in partnership with the Economic and Social Research Council, have jointly undertaken activity to establish the fundamental issues and debates surrounding UK housing relevant to policy, practice and research at this time.

Various housing academics and experts gathered at the event to discuss the challenges of housing in the UK, and its future. Discussions were focussed particularly on the topics of the economics of housing, the fundamental problem of housing supply, planning and regulation, poverty and social consequences of housing supply and distributions and inequality within the UK housing market.

This all-day conference was followed by an evening panel discussion, which incorporated the key learning points from the day. This work follows on from an initial forum held on 16th July called ‘The future of UK housing: defining the challenge’.
