Tue 24 Jun 2014, 11:00 - 13:00

Tuesday 24 June 2014, 11.00am - 1.00pm The British Academy, 10-11, Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AH

This British Academy-Guardian roundtable, organised in association with the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, sought to address the language learning deficit that exists in Anglophone countries, as well as the costs and benefits of different approaches to promoting multilingualism in these countries.

Chaired by Will Hutton, Principal of Hertford College, Oxford, the roundtable was attended by leading figures in education, industry and government from the US and the UK.  Discussants addressed how language policy has been addressed in their respective countries at all levels of the language supply chain, and outlined possible steps forward to build the linguistic skills base in each country.
