Carlos Moedas, European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation

We are delighted to have hosted a public lecture and debate with the European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, Carlos Moedas.

This was Commissioner Moedas’s first public lecture in the UK since taking office in November 2014. It provided an opportunity to hear Commissioner Moedas outline his vision for European research, at a time when Europe and the wider world faces a growing number of societal, environmental and economic challenges.

This is a critically important time for European research and innovation. The new Horizon 2020 funding programme is entering its second year and has faced huge demand and expectations. In addition, the Commissioner has been charged with making recommendations on the future direction of science advice in Brussels to the Commission President before the summer. There have also been concerns with the proposed Investment Plan for Europe and its impact on European research funding.

This public lecture was followed by a debate with the audience.

This lecture was organised by The Academy of Medical Sciences, The British Academy, The Royal Academy of Engineering, The Royal Society, and The Royal Society of Edinburgh.
