British Academy/Wellcome Trust Conferences bring together scholars and specialists from around the world to explore themes related to health and wellbeing.

Increasing numbers of individuals and families are seeking asylum in the UK for various reasons, ranging from persecution and armed conflict to natural disasters and poverty. Upon arrival these individuals are dispersed and offered Home Office accommodation including hotels. While waiting for decision on their asylum claims, many face socio-cultural and linguistic barriers which compound their experiences of trauma, loss, and separation. This multidisciplinary conference will examine the psychological and social challenges faced by asylum seekers and refugees across a range of areas including, destitution, poverty, detention, dispersal, accommodation, employment, education, mental health and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. The conference will also build on, and consolidate, this knowledge by considering best practice for effectively responding to the reception and integration of those seeking asylum in the UK.
