British Academy/Wellcome Trust Conferences bring together scholars and specialists from around the world to explore themes related to health and wellbeing.

An ‘environment’ fundamentally describes a relationship between an object or subject, and its surrounding conditions or elements (from the French environer: ‘to surround, encircle, encompass’). We can only define our environment – what surrounds us – through an understanding of who and what we are. This conference explores the multiplicity of meanings behind the widely used term ‘environment’ and how they are used in architecture and related subjects, in both contemporary and historical practice. Architects and planners have the unique responsibility to alter environments, whether or not they understand how to navigate or overcome constraints associated with these uncertainties. By retaining socio-political and cultural dimensions at the centre of new explorations along natural environments, human-centred environments and controlled environments, this conference aims to highlight the limitations of technologically-driven innovations and how they can be addressed.
