When people think of Turkish football, they don’t tend to picture scenes of camaraderie, hospitality and humour. They think of banners proclaiming ‘Welcome to Hell’, violence and intimidation. In this lecture, based on his forthcoming book, John McManus argues for football as more than hooliganism or leisure – it is a unique lens onto contemporary Turkey, its society, culture and politics.

Dr John McManus is an anthropologist and post-doctoral fellow at the British Institute at Ankara, where he researches sport, digital media and migration in Turkey and the Turkish diaspora. Welcome to Hell? is his first book.
