British Academy Elevate Programme - Leadership Stream: How to Apply

Eligible ECRN members can apply via a direct link on Flexigrant, with full commitment required to the programme’s training, engagement and post‑programme activities.

Applying to participate in the British Academy Elevate Programme

You must submit an application via Flexigrant®, our online grant management system, to apply for a place in the Elevate Programme. Applications will be reviewed by a panel in a competitive process, and all applicants will be notified of the outcome of their submission.

The application is only available via direct link, which will be listed on the ECRN Online Community Platform and circulated in the ECRN Newsletter.

The application will not be listed through the general Flexigrant homepage.

Places on the Elevate course cannot be reserved

Due to the competitive nature of the scheme, places cannot be held and applicants cannot register interest in advance. Please check the website for updates on when applications open and how to apply.

Eligibility

You must be an active* British Academy ECRN member to be eligible to apply to participate in the programme.

  • *To be considered an active member you must have attended at least three Network events by the time of application submission.

Wellcome-funded ECRs in the SHAPE disciplines, including those based outside the UK, can apply by first joining the ECRN.

Wellcome-funded ECRs living outside of the UK are able to participate**.

  • **Many of the courses, across both the Leadership and Advancement streams, will be delivered online to ensure accessibility for Wellcome-funded ECRs based outside the UK. You’ll be able to join remotely and take full advantage of the training and development opportunities.

Expectations

Participation and commitment expectations:

  • Applicants must be active members of the ECRN and must have attend at least three ECRN events by the time of application submission.
  • Applicants must obtain approval from their line managers and institution, if currently employed. Independent researchers can be approved by the ECRN Elevate team.
  • Applicants are expected to commit to the full training programme, including ten in person sessions from March- June 2027.
  • To ensure the quality and continuity of the training, participants are required to attend all sessions in full and for the duration of the sessions.
  • Upon acceptance into the programme, participants will be required to sign a commitment agreement, outlining the expectations and responsibilities for their participation.
  • Within nine months of completing the programme participants must organise an event or activity for the Network. Funding up to £3000 is available to support delivery.
  • Participants agree to provide peer-to-peer mentoring to participants in the next cohort, starting in 2027.
  • Throughout the programme and upon completion, participants are expected to complete course surveys and offer feedback on the training experience and respond to the evaluation survey and questions regarding the programme’s impact.

Fees, Funding and Additional Support

All courses are free of charge

You will not need to pay to participate in the Elevate Programme- Leadership Stream.

Travel and accommodation costs

The ECRN will cover travel and accommodation expenses for eligible ECRs attending in-person sessions.

All travel and accommodation bookings are managed through our bookings partner via the required booking form.

Childcare costs

If you require childcare support, please notify the ECRN Elevate team. We offer coverage of up to £60 per day. Participants will need to cover this upfront and then be reimbursed.
