Two Enlightenments

Professor Gertrude Himmelfarb FBA, Professor Emeritus of History in the City University of New York, delivered the 5th Elie Kedourie Lecture at the Academy on 15 May 2001. In the lecture, Profesor Himmelfarb illustrated the differences between the French and British Enlightenments by focusing on the distinctive social ethics in the two traditions. In this edited extract, she considers the influence of the French ‘philosophes’ upon the Revolution.
