The British Academy's fifth International Forum took place on Thursday 11 July with policymakers, academics, parliamentarians, the media and other key stakeholders to discuss the diverse connotations and manifestations of the UK's soft power. This Forum helped to inform the House of Lords inquiry on Soft Power and the UK's Influence as well as the British Academy's report on the subject.

Alongside the Academy's conference on Emerging Powers Going Global, the Academy held an International Forum on Thursday 10 October with Dr Wang Jianye, Chief Economist of the China Export-Import Bank. A fascinating and illuminating discussion was attended by a strong selection of policymakers.

This Forum explored the opportunities and risks involved in the developing re-engagement with Iran and what practical steps could be taken to progress this further. The Forum included a range of academics and policymakers discussing a breadth of political, scholarly and practical issues.

This forum focused on the South African education system and the challenges it faces to achieve the expectations and outcomes desired. The discussion explored how certain South African schools do well in spite of adverse conditions, and considered practical strategies to achieve this more widely.

The day after the British Academy's conference on Contested Approaches to Conflict, Stability and Security: Rethinking State Fragility the Academy held a Forum that discussed with a range of academics, policymakers and practitioners the UK government's approach to stabilisation.

This Forum engaged a broad cross-disciplinary range of academics and policymakers in a discussion on the 'challenging contexts' in which learning takes place (such as urban slums, border cities, remote rural areas and areas of conflict) and explored innovative ways of how to conceptualise 'challenging contexts'.

Global recognition of the importance of early childhood development has sparked a focus on early childhood in the Sustainable Development Goals and has prompted increasing numbers of low and middle income countries to formulate early childhood development policies. This Forum discussed existing and emerging early childhood development research and policy approaches.
