The British Academy and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) held a joint workshop in Beijing, as part of a series of collaborative activities aimed at strengthening scholarly links and promoting policy dialogue. The event successfully brought together 25 leading scholars and policy makers from the UK, China and the USA.

The British Academy and the CBRL British Institute in Amman organised a series of joint activities with a focus on research methods in social science. On 25 November, a seminar for university lecturers from across the MENA region (Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, UAE, Egypt, Morocco) focused on the state of methodological training in MENA and how such training could be better integrated in teaching and research programmes.

In collaboration with the British Institute of Persian Studies and the British Council, the British Academy convened a Researcher Links workshop on Cities: Past and Future. It brought together a mix of experienced academics and early career scholars from Iran and the UK, to exchange knowledge on topics related to cultural heritage, architecture and urban planning as well as build links for future collaboration. The workshop, which took place on 24-26 October in Edinburgh and St Andrews, included a public lecture by Professor Robert Hillenbrand FBA and a panel discussion on available funding opportunities for collaborative research between the UK and Iran.

The workshop brought together 20 scholars from Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt, Iraq, and the UK, to discuss challenges which researchers and university administrators in the Middle East and in the UK face in seeking to establish a secure basis for academic independence and excellence. Participants identified areas of common concern and explored how they could be tackled. The opening address was delivered by Dr Muhammad Saidam from the Royal Scientific Society of Jordan, on behalf of HRH Princess Sumaya Bint el Hassan.

In the third of the British Academy's International Forum Series academics, politicians, diplomats and business leaders from the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain came together in order to discuss the successes and failures of the Good Friday Agreement 15 Years after it was first signed. Fellow of the British Academy, Professor Marianne Elliott, chaired the discussion, providing an overview from a previous British Academy event of the Good Friday Agreement 10 years on.

The British Academy's fifth International Forum took place on Thursday 11 July with policymakers, academics, parliamentarians, the media and other key stakeholders to discuss the diverse connotations and manifestations of the UK's soft power. This Forum helped to inform the House of Lords inquiry on Soft Power and the UK's Influence as well as the British Academy's report on the subject.

Alongside the Academy's conference on Emerging Powers Going Global, the Academy held an International Forum on Thursday 10 October with Dr Wang Jianye, Chief Economist of the China Export-Import Bank. A fascinating and illuminating discussion was attended by a strong selection of policymakers.

This Forum explored the opportunities and risks involved in the developing re-engagement with Iran and what practical steps could be taken to progress this further. The Forum included a range of academics and policymakers discussing a breadth of political, scholarly and practical issues.
