Managing Flood Risk: harnessing local knowledge
8pm, Tuesday 28 June 2016
Can environmental disturbances like flooding ‘force thought’ amongst those affected by them and, thereby, occasion the emergence of new kinds of knowledge and association capable of improving the way such environmental risks are managed? This talk reflects on collaborative research in Pickering, North Yorkshire to argue that harnessing the experiences of communities affected by events like flooding can improve both the modelling techniques used to estimate flood risk and the potential of novel measures to mitigate that risk at the catchment or community scale.
