Will the EU Science Advice Mechanism deliver smarter policy?
8.30pm, Tuesday 28 june 2016
Smart policy needs to be based both on smart evidence from relevant experts and smart judgements about what is politically feasible. These are big challenges in the European context given the requirement to take into account the multi-layered policy process as well as the considerable cultural and behavioural variations across Europe. The European Commission has recently established a new Science Advice Mechanism with a High Level Group, a consortium of academies and a new secretariat. For this to work will require inputs from the scientific research communities across the social sciences as well as the natural and life sciences. The British Academy along with its sister academies in the UK is committed to helping this experiment to succeed.
