Scottish National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher entries for SHAPE subjects

The following resource provides an overview of entries for SHAPE subjects at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher levels in Scotland since the introduction of new and revised qualifications at these levels in the mid-2010s. Since the introduction of these new and revised qualifications, entries for SHAPE subjects have comprised between 47% and 53% of all National 5 entries, between 59% and 65% of all Higher entries, and between 47% and 52% of all Advanced Higher entries.

The first three graphs on this page depict overall National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher entry trends. The tables further below provide entries data for each SHAPE subject included in this work. Further details on trends in subject uptake are available in the British Academy’s Studying SHAPE report on social sciences and humanities subjects in secondary education.

User notes: In the subject-level entries tables at the bottom of the page, the ‘Trend in subject entries (as a proportion of overall entries)’ trend line demonstrates how the number of entries for a particular subject has evolved as a proportion of overall entries (SHAPE and non-SHAPE) for a particular qualification level (National 5s, Highers or Advanced Highers).
